As the United States has led the Information Age, the economy of the world has transformed (Mukherji, 2002) in which Information Technology has contributed so well to the economic transformation by reducing cost and increasing productivity. This generation witnesses the evolution of the digital information technology, which nowadays has transformed the substance of daily life that people live (Haag & Cummings, 2008). The world is living in the era of digital information technologies. People are using digital technology at every minute in their lives. Internet equips organizations and businesses a new dynamic way of communication and business operations. Communication technology becomes a crucial catalyst for organizations in business processes, operations, and global supply chain management.
Indeed, Haag and Cummings (2008) suggested the emerging technologies presented in four important trends that include Internet, wireless, physiological interaction, and pure technology. With a closer look into the recent technology trends while in agreement with those important trends, in the market today, mobilization, database management, cloud computing, and the virtualization are actually emerging and evolving.
* Mobilization merges with computing technology allows people to communicate and work everywhere they go.
* Database management enables businesses to control the creation and maintenance of knowledge management, decision support system, record management, and much more.
* The cloud computing utilizes Internet and Web technologies to deliver the least management effort while enable easy access to computing resources such as data access, network storage, and applications.
* Virtualization reduces the resources, supports IT Green initiative, and provides cost savings and easier management.
In those technology trends, cloud computing and virtualization seems to be the focus in today information technology business. With an IT department, any organization can be beneficial from virtualization technology. Differently put, virtualization technology such as Microsoft Hyper-V or VMware, contributes to a definition of the private cloud. Perhaps, virtualization is the last trend in business for reducing cost and increasing the efficiency of utilizing technology (Meek, 2011). In addition, virtualization enables organization to pursue green IT initiative. Virtual servers reduce the electricity consumption because of the reducing in hardware needed.
We understand that virtualization and cloud computing technology provides an immediate cost saving by less energy consumption, less carbon footprint, and less IT administrative charges. However, does it fit for every organization? What are other factors need to be considered before switching over to these trends?
